It has become a cherished tradition for our team to kick off the boating season during the May festivities.
The weather in Latvia is already warm enough to sleep in a tent and feel comfortable – provided, of course, that you have a good mattress and a warm sleeping bag.
Our whole group switched to inflatable camping mats a long time ago.
For spring trips like this, it’s best to choose a winter camping mat, as temperatures near the water often drop below -7 degrees on May nights.
There were 20 of us on this trip, including three children! We
set off on a trip down the River Ogre! This is already a tried-and-tested route for us; we’ve hiked this river more than 10 times! The advantages of the River
Ogre:
• Fast-flowing current
• Minimal obstructions
• One weir
• There are practically no private properties along the banks
• There are convenient access points for loading boats Over the course of
three days, we covered just over 53 kilometres.
Of course, it’s worth noting that there are few designated campsites along this route, so it’s best to bring everything you need for your own comfort!
In previous years, we cooked for the group using Finnish candles (logs). This is a traditional and eco-friendly way of cooking, but on this hike we tried something new!

It’s a wood-chip stove. This device significantly sped up the process of making solyanka – and that’s not all! Solyanka is an essential part of our hikes; you could even say that without it, there wouldn’t be a hike at all. A wood-chip stove like this is quick and easy to set up, and the fire catches practically in a flash.
A special thank you to our chef, Vova! It was absolutely delicious!
Perhaps one day we can share our hiking menu, as the selection of ingredients is a real art form!
What else is important to remember?
As there were quite a few rapids on the river, we couldn’t avoid a few capsizes. That’s why dry bags, waterproof rucksacks and other suitable packing are essential for canoeing trips!
With good preparation, a trip is always a blast!
