It has become a good tradition for our team to open the boating season during the May bank holiday.
The weather in Latvia already allows you to sleep in a tent and feel comfortable, provided you have a good mattress and a warm sleeping bag.
Our whole company has long since switched to inflatable camping mats.
For such spring hikes, it is better to choose a winter camping mat, as the temperature often drops below -7 degrees on May nights near the water.
We were 20 people on this hike, including three children!
We went hiking along the Ogre River! This is already our well-tested route, we have walked this river more than 10 times!
Pros of the Ogre River:
– Fast current
– Minimal obstructions
– One dam
– Practically no private areas along the bank
– Comfortable access points for loading boats
In three days we covered a little more than 53 kilometres.
Of course, it should be noted that there are few parking facilities along this route, so it is better to bring everything you need for your comfort!
In previous years, we cooked food for the group using Finnish candles (stumps). This is a traditional and ecological way of cooking, but on this hike we tried something new!

It’s a wood chip stove. This appliance has greatly speeded up the process of making solanca and more! Solanka is a must for us on the trek, without it, you could say, there would be no trek. Such a wood chip stove is easy and quick to set up, and the fire is practically lightning fast.
Special thanks to our chef Vov! It was delicious!
One of these days we can share our hiking menu, because selecting produce is an art form!
What else is important to remember?
As there were enough rapids on the river, there was no boat capsizing. That’s why waterproof bags, waterproofs and other gear are a must on boat trips!
Hiking is always fun when you’re well prepared!
